Even the IT People Can Be Caught Phishing
Our company provides cybersecurity training. I often find myself skeptical of emails that look suspicious. I have a great track record of identifying these or at minimum erring on the side of caution. But even the best can find an email convincing. In this case, depending on the platform you are viewing the email, even you can fall victim.
For example, my colleague, Chad, set up a phishing campaign for some of our employees internally. The first one, I immediately spotted and moved to junk. Although aware my colleague was testing this functionality internally, while reading an email from my phone, it had triggered on enough information to pique my interest. I clicked on the seemingly harmless email to find I had fallen victim to our phishing/cybersecurity training. Drats! I hang my head in shame. I had such a good long-standing record of preventing this! How did I get caught phishing?
Let’s take a closer look at this. Microsoft does a great job detecting potential phishing emails. This is what I saw in Outlook (after initially viewing it on my phone).
This phishing email is easily identifiable. The UPS domain that appears invalid, photos not deemed safe to view, links seem suspect. All easy signs to identify this may not be legitimate.
Now, let me show you what I saw on my phone.
Quite a different look. The graphics and text look legitimate, everything seems to be in place, no misspelled words. Oh yes, I ordered something from Amazon yesterday, but it was to be delivered tomorrow via UPS. The email hit on all the right triggers, so I clicked on the tracking number link and fell victim to the scam.
I was greeted with this message:
This is how fast a breach can occur. Checking email from my mobile phone bypassed a lot of the safeguards provided by Outlook on my desktop PC.
You can have the best security in place, but your weakest link can always be an employee. Proper Cybersecurity training and continuous education on methods that are taken to steal your data, can be the key to preventing a breach of your network.
There is no perfect method of network security. It takes a combination of tools to create a security stack to prevent a breach on your network.
